Bread Rolls with Ham, Cheese and Arugula – Time for Finger Food

Bread rolls with ham and cheese are an excellent appetizer, perfect for an aperitivo, but also suitable for buffets. Do you have last-minute guests or you need to improvise something after a long day at work? Or maybe you simply want a tasty and easy different snack than usual?
Then you’re in the right place.

I thought it was nice to talk about finger food and party food in Italy. We like to prepare little small bites to eat as aperitivo or during parties, both for kids and adults. There are plenty of useful ideas that you can use during these social occasions when it’s impossible to cook a whole meal for everyone ( yes, this skill is perfectly mastered by grandmas, but for moms who work or young people it starts to be a little problematic). The awesome part is that these appetizers or snacks are so delicious and appealing – also visually – that it’s absolutely a win-win!

I am talking about a very simple preparation  (you don’t have to cook anything)  that will let you to bring something original to the table in no time at all. These rolls, or maybe it would be more appropriate to call them swivels, are made of white bread slices and they are first filled with ham and fresh cheese. Then as last touch we will add fresh arugula to give a nice touch. To obtain the little nice spirals we’ll just need to roll the bread and cut it.
Child’s play,isn’t it?

Today I chose this combination, but you have to know that this hypnotic finger food can be prepared with the filling you prefer. You can really go wild with your fantasy according to the menus your are preparing or to the occasion as well.
I ‘ll give you some suggestions based on my favorites :

– Tuna and mayonese
– Pesto, tomato sauce and mozzarella
– Mortadella and cream cheese
– Shrimps and cocktail sauce
If you are planning a birthday party or a birthday party, a combination of different rolls will be an irresistible choice! And to know what’s the perfect drink with this kind of appetizer, check this Aperol Spritz recipe 🙂

The bread to use is the white bread for sandwiches, the ideal one is the long-shaped one, as you can stuff it all at once and then cut it in a second moment. In Italy it is extremely easy to find it but here I couldn’ t find it anywhere so I opted for the normal white bread in slices. If you let the rolls resting in the fridge before cutting them, they will be more compact and firm and it will be easier for you to cut them without risking to make too many crumbles.

Now let’s see how fast and easily you can bring those little bites to the table.

Bread Rolls with Ham, Cheese and Arugula

Ingredients (4 servings)

5 big slices (250 gr.) white bread
5,5 oz (150 gr.) Ham
5,5 oz (150 gr.) Fresh cheese ( robiola, ricotta ecc)
3,5 oz (100 gr.) Arugula
Salt

Method

First of all, take your bread slices and, one by one, flatten them with a rolling pin.

Afterwards, transfer each bread slice over a piece of cling film. Now it is time to distribute the filling. Spread the the cheese all over, put some ham over it and terminate with a sprinkle of arugula leaves and a pinch of salt. Here I am giving an indication on the quantities, but you can use less or more.

At this point, you shoud roll up the bread slice on the shorter side, slowly and carefully . The cling film will make everything stick together firmly. Follow the same procedure for all bread slices and transfer into the fridge.

Let the rolls rest in the refrigerator up to 2 hours, then remove the cling film and cut into small rolls (2 cm of thickness each is ok).

Serve the bread rolls on a nice serving plate and enjoy…
